In the Kitchen
Sharon:
- Lodge Enameled 3-qt Casserole Covered Cast Iron in Spice Island Red: I love this!
- Wusthof Classic Series 8" Chef's Knife: Make sure to get the classic series--a great knife.
- Epicurean cutting board, large: The bigger, better for cutting.
Winter:
- 7-in-1 Instant Pot Programmable Pressure Cooker, 6-qt: Yup, I'm one of those crazy Instant Pot people.
- Oxo Garlic Press: Well-designed garlic press. Yes, it's a uni-tasker kitchen tool, but it's effective.
- Hamilton Beach Sous Vide and Slow Cooker, 6-qt: Best. Steaks. Ever. Just saying!
Chef Lee:
- Global GF-5, 7-inch Hollow Ground Vegetable Knife: It has a good weight in my hand.
- Dexas 15" x 20" White Plastic Cutting Board with Well: You can do a lot on a big cutting board.
- Kirkland Nitrile Gloves, Large: Makes prepping multiple foods really easy.
Podcasting
When we first started podcasting, all of this equipment was very foreign and a little intimidating. Feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions about our recommendations below. We promise, it's not a dumb question, because we probably asked the same one when we first started!
This is all the equipment, software, and tutorials we use currently to podcast.
- Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone: Best intro mic for the price, hands down. It has a USB plugin, so if you were doing a solo show, this would plug right into your computer--you wouldn't need a mixer. We own 3 of these mics, just in case we have a local guest interview.
- Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Recording Audio Interface: A compact mixer interface if you have 2 people podcasting. You can also set it up so you can patch in a Skype interview.
- Focusrite Scarlett 8i8 USB Recording Audio Interface: A little bit bigger mixer interface. This is perfect to have if you've got multiple people on the episode (up to 4 people).
- Silverback Roar XLR Patch Cable, 6 ft. Premium Microphone Cable: These are long, flexible and sturdy. You'll need one of these if you're going to use a mixer that has an XLR attachment.
- Sennheiser HD 598 Cs Closeback Headphones: Lee got these for Winter as a birthday present and she LOVES them! They are comfortable (for bigger and smaller heads) and the sound quality is wonderful. Plus, you get a couple types of cords, one is audio jack and the other is XLR.
- Apple MacBook Pro, 15 inch: You don't need to have a MacBook--you just need some sort of computer!
- UHF Wireless Lav Mic: We have a couple of these in case we need to be onsite or are doing a cooking demonstration.
Extras that are helpful:
- Neewer Microphone Suspension Boom Scissor Arm Stand: It can move to any position you need it to go!
- Dragonpad Pop Filter Studio Microphone Mic Wind Screen Pop Filter: This would be perfect if you were planning on doing a solo show. We started out with these, but we switched. See below.
- Mudder Large Foam Mic Windshield: We switched to these so we could see each other's faces while podcasting.
- XLR to headphone adaptor: Since the Scarlett have XLR female for output, we use this to convert to headphone jacks (or 3.5 mm) since we often have headphones or earbuds that can plug in.
- Headphone splitter: Since there is one (on the Scarlett 2i2) and two (on the Scarlett 8i8) audio jacks, if you have more than one person listening to the output, it's nice to have this splitter.
- Seagate Backup Plus 4T External Hard Drive: You'll be okay using your computer's hard drive, but once you get a few podcast episodes under your belt, you may consider moving your files to an external hard drive to help your computer out and prevent it from crashing.
Software:
- Audacity: Free audio recording software. We know a lot of people that use this.
- Adobe Audition: You can do so much in this recording software. Consider getting the Creative Cloud.
Tutorials:
- Pat Flynn's Podcasting Tutorials: Such a great overview! These are worth the watch!
- Mike Russell, Music Radio Creative: We learned (and are still learning) how to make our audio sound so much better through Mike's tutorials. He is a great teacher.
