Episode 75: Food Trends of 2017 & Food Predictions for 2018

Wednesday, January 3, 2018
Happy New Year! On this week's episode, we welcome Sharon back and have a lively discussion on what we saw in 2017 that we'd like to see go the way of the dodo, then talk about 2018 food trends we're particularly excited about. Then we talk about food goals that we're going to set for ourselves in 2018. What are you looking forward to in 2018?

Let's taco 'bout it!

  • You should re-listen to our Christmas Food Traditions episode--it's funny!
  • Sharon ate all of the things while she was away from the podcast--her favorite thing she had a smoked pork shoulder Ike made on the Big Green Egg.
  • Winter and Lee went to the Italian restaurant Stanza for their anniversary dinner and LOVED it! Surprisingly, the waygu beef entree was a little clumsy and disappointing, but their duck breast entree was the winner of the night.
  • Winter's top 3 trends that need to die of 2017: Avocado toast everywhere on social media, food videos that are all the same with nobody in them (all the Tasty-style videos), anything unicorn-flavored (I'm looking at you, Starbucks. By the way, you should check out this commercial).
  • Sharon's top 3 trends that need to die of 2017: Designer cupcakes, pumpkin pie spice, and food videos that are too slow (some are good and others are SLOW).

  • Millennial food-influences, such as eating more at home and DIY-ing food, is an exciting trend.
  • Winter is also excited about poke, a Hawaiian chunk salad, coming more on the scene. It's sushi in a bowl!
  • Sharon is excited to see more food styling--it's beautiful and happy and a break from some of the heaviness of of what is happening in the world today. We love the work of Baked by Joanna and LokoKitchen.
  • Sharon's 2018 food goals involve eating more fish and setting a food budget.
  • Winters 2018 food goals involve cooking more herself and justifying all the kitchen gear (such as the Instant Pot, Blendtec Blender, and Hamilton Beach Sous Vide) we have (ala January Cure 2018).
  • What are your food goals for 2018?
  • We help our Food Fight listener figure out how to stomach golden milk. Sharon loves Heidi Swanson's 101 Cookbooks' recipe for turmeric tea. Maybe add honey. Or you can be okay not loving this trend (you be you!).
